Sending Email to a Mobile Phone

By: Stephen Cope, Sat Dec 10th, 2005 12:41:45 AM

If you're like me and have difficulty sending SMS text messages then it is possible to use something you're more familiar with ... email.

It is possible to exchange messages with a mobile phone via email. So if the person you are trying to contact is only available by mobile phone you can simply send them an email to their mobile instead of their normal email address.

Keep it Short

(Article continued below)

SMS messages are generally limited to 160 characters (Latin alphabet) and so your message exchange needs to be kept short. If you want to send longer messages, with say attachments, you can send a short message (message alert) informing them to read their mailbox for the main message.

How it Works

Because the North American and European mobile networks work differently the actual message exchange process works differently depending on the mobile phone number's country of origin, and not on the mobile phones current location.

Cell phones/mobile phones in North America have a built in email address whereas in Europe they don't. In North America it is possible to send directly to the cell phone where in Europe you need to use an SMS/Email Gateway. The SMS/Email process including the use of portals is covered in more detail in How to Send Email to a Mobile Phone
