How to grab Public Domain Works off the 'net and Turn it into aBy: Brother Paul, Sat Dec 10th, 2005 11:42:54 AM Excertped from The Writer's Package Version of "Open Your Daily Newspaper & MAKE MONEY!" Copyright 2005 Found Secrets How To Grab Public Domain & (Other Non-copyrighted Works) Off Of The 'Net and Turn Them (As Well As Other written Works Into PDFs) For those unaware of the cash potential of Public Domain, this could be one of the most exciting articles you have ever seen. For those of you who have heard of Public Domain, but haven't figured out how to get hold of these gems, this article could be invaluable to you. (Article continued below)
Although we cover it a little more later on in this article as to how we have used Public Domain, suffice it to say that you can do almost anything with a work that is in the Public Domain. (We give a couple examples later on in this article.) We are not going to cover where to pick up Public Domain works. Most people already know how and where to get that information, with the most notable place being The Gutenberg project: http://www.gutenberg.org But, there is also an excellent listing of other Public Domain works at: http://www.booksforabuck.com/general/pubsources.html Although it is possible to get books after 1923 that are in the Public Domain, we are not going to go into how to do that. Our recommendation is that you find material written prior to 1923. All right, you are going to need to go pick up two pieces of free software. The first is the ever versatile OpenOffice program. This program does everything that big word processing and office-style program does. But, it's free! (Unless you buy the CD version of it and then you will just be paying shipping and handling.) If you are dial-up downloading, it will take a while, so make sure that you have the time to tie up your line, and make sure that you don't have any automatic disconnects on when you are downloading it. It's about 65 megs, so it is a rather huge program. http://www.openoffice.org/ There are video tutorials about using this tool, including converting works into a PDF. But, since you already have EasyPDF, (and if you don't then you are reading this as an article and need to contact us on getting a copy of it,) we are always able to be contacted about that at: mailtofoundsecrets@foundsecrets.com/?subject=EasyPDF-Material however, if you are interested in these, we have them available and you can always drop a line to us about them: mailto:foundsecrets@foundsecrets.com/?subject=Open-Office-Video-T utorials But, since you already have EasyPDF, you already know how to create a PDF and where to locate what we consider the best "free" PDF creation tool. Now, the reason for the quotes is because there is a pop-up everytime you use it, and if you want to get rid of the pop-up, and also use it for "commercial" purposes, then you should purchase it. When compared to the price tag of the Adobe® counterparts, they are very reasonable and there are even other useful tools available. The total price at this time for the entire set of all their tools is $29.95. So, if you don't already own EasyPDF, then you can go and pick up a copy of this "FREE" software at: http://www.pdf995.com Make sure you get the following files downloaded to your hard drive: PDF 995 Printer Driver Free Converter PDF Edit 995 Driver Signature 995 Now, there's another piece of free software that you need. It will only work on Internet Explorer. http://www.netsnippets.com Now, whenever you run across a non-copyrighted work, especially those that are in the public domain, on the internet, you can follow the directions available using your FREE Net Snippets software to copy the text and/or images to a file in your hard drive. Once that is done, you can then select all and add it into your OpenOffice text document and save it in either OpenOffice or Word format. (Remember, if you save it in OpenOffice format, and try to send it to someone, you had best make sure they have the OpenOffice program also, because even though OpenOffice will convert Word Programs, Word will not convert OpenOffice.) Also, a couple helpful tips here if you are creating an e-book. At the end of chapter, it is a good idea to insert a "page break." It makes the PDF look a lot cleaner. If you are putting in a link, it is easier to list the whole link, just as we have done here in this book, instead of highlighting the text, and then inserting a hyperlink. For example, your link should look like this: http://www.cureforbeingsickandtiredofitall.com not Come Visit Us Here At Cure For Being Sick And Tired Of It All! And, if you are creating links to your e-mail, they should have the full address, including the "mailto:" piece. So, it should look like this: mailto:foundsecrets@foundsecrets.com not Our e-mail address at Found Secrets The reason for this you will see in just a bit. Now, once you have it in one of those formats just listed, go ahead and hit your "Print" button, but use the PDF995 printer. Within seconds, you will have a PDF995. But, we recommend that you do three quick things with your PDF. Don't worry. They rarely take more than a few minutes, and if your book is not overly long, it could only take a few seconds. First, click your "Page Number" tab and add page numbers to your PDF. Second, open up your text document, NOT THE PDF that you just created. Now, following along in your text document, you can click the "Bookmark" tab, and add bookmarks to each chapter. Just click "Add Sibling" to add each new bookmark. You don't have to just add chapters. If you have a subscription page at the end of your e-book, you can also add that. When all the bookmarks are added, just click "Add Bookmarks to last PDF created." Third, click "Links." Now, just hit "Auto-Convert URL's to links." This is the reason we wanted you to use full address on your URL's and "mailto:" on your e-mail links. If you don't you will have to go through like we did, and type in the text that you wanted converted to a link as well as the address of the URL, and then click "Convert Text to Links." Now, that may seem like a small thing and not bothersome at all. But, if you are like some writers, you just put "Click Here," as your link. Now, if you have put thirty different links all with "Click Here," your Link Converter on your PDF Edit 995 tool, will be going over and changing all the links to the last URL that you converted that text to. Then your readers will get mad, determine you are an incompetent, and never have anything to ever do with you again, because you wasted their time. As a matter of fact, they will probably come to your door and fling "dog poop" on your doorstep because you made it too difficult for them to understand. Okay, maybe the "dog poop" thing won't happen. But, you get the point. It's just easier to put the link in there as a full URL address or put "mailto:" in front of your e-mail addresses, then it is to come up with unique text for each and every link in your e-book. By the way, a quick word about Public Domain books. Public Domain books are books that have had the copyright run out on them. And, you can freely use them anyway that you want. Our staff members have taken two public domain works, Wallace Wattles' "The Science of Getting Rich," and James Allen's "As A Man Thinketh," and FestuSized them. What's FestuSizing? Well, you have heard of Matt Dillon's deputy Festus Haggin. Remember his Southern drawl and colorful sayings. Well, staff member Brother Paul took those two great classics and turned them into "The Exact Way Ta Git Rich" and "As Ya Think" respectively. They are available on our website: http://www.cureforbeingsickandtiredofitall.com as are a few other Public Domain works. (It's all right. They're free as long as you sign up for the "Guided Thinking" e-zine.) Also, if you have a scanner, and a lot of patience, you can recreate these public domain works electronically exactly as they were written. We have done that with the extremely rare version of Theron Dumont's "Successful Salesmanship," which is available from us at Found Secrets. If you are interested, you can drop us a line at: mailto:foundsecrets@foundsecrets.com/?subject=successful-salesman ship-the-book But, remember, you now have the "free" tools to write your e-book. We cannot help you with the talent part, but if you are reading this at the conclusion of the special "Writers' Package" edition of "Open Your Daily Newspaper & MAKE MONEY!" you already know how to generate ideas. (If you are reading this as an article, "Open Your Daily Newspaper & MAKE MONEY!" is available from our websites at either: http://www.foundsecrets.com or http://www.cureforbeingsickandtiredofitall.com where you can just look for the order button. While you are at the latter site, you can pick up a few other resources that is available under the category of "More Free Stuff You Can Steal.") Although, we cannot help you with the talent end of writing, most of your other aspects are covered. (Which is especially true, if you have the Writers' Package Edition of "Open Your Daily Newspaper & MAKE MONEY!") If you are reading this at the conclusion of the Writers' Package edition, forgive us. (But, it needs repeating anyhow, if you have chosen a path as a writer.) We will now, once again, include the best story on how to write: At a writing seminar, all the eager young authors waited for the famous Ray Bradbury to provide his years of wisdom concerning writing. Their minds determined that Mr. Bradbury, who was the final speaker of this seminar would provide the key to unlock the magic within their fertile minds, and make them instantaneously best-selling science fiction authors. Mr. Bradbury slowly strode onto the stage, and surveyed the crowd. The first words from the legend's mouth were: "So, you all want to be writers?" There were signs, gestures, and murmurings of agreement. Mr. Bradbury continued, "Then go write." He turned around and left the stage. His point: there's no magic formula for writing. As you write, you will learn what works best for you. And, since you are either reading this in our "Writers' Package" version or are reading this from other source, you are obviously intending to be a writer. As we love to say, "We can lead you to the water at the pool, but we ain't gonna push you in!" You have to do that all by yourself. So, jump into it! Do a full fledged "dive," "ease yourself in," "do a big old cannonball," or "just belly-flop" in. One of our favorite motivationalists, Mike Litman, said it best: "You don't have to get it right! You just have to get it going!" So, with that in mind, when it comes to writing: GET IT GOING—RIGHT NOW! Make it a great "writing" Life! The Staff of Found Secrets About the author: Ms. Kathy and her webmaster, (husband) Brother Paul find secrets few know and provide them to you so you can have a better life in all aspects of your life.
