Keep an Open Mind

We live in a diverse and fast pace world. Businesses hire from all walks of life to create an eccentric and hopefully a better business. There is nothing wrong with this idea, but the real problem happens when two people just focus on their differences.

Not everyone is just like you, and it is almost pointless to try to find and hire these people. You don’t want clones of yourself for how will you ever gain new ideas or perspectives? Different ideas can help you, but you have to figure out how.

(Article continued below)

There are books and courses that are dedicate to this concept. So read them and learn how. All I am asking from you is to open your mind to your workers’ point of view and opinions. Don’t fight them, use them.

I love new people in the workplace. Their life experiences and new points of view always have entertained and educated me.

I have learned how to stream line my work and to get others motivated just by allowing these new people to try it out on their own first. Watch them closely so they don’t mess up too much, but learn from them.

Educated yourself on what both of you add to each other’s tool box, and what will not work here. This skill takes time and effort, but it instills automatic trust and a passion to work. You have to let your workers know that you will allow them to try new things and be there for them if they do something wrong. This is not a free pass to do whatever they want at work, but that it is ok to make mistakes and learn.

Tip: Your older and more experienced workers want to try new and innovative ways to improve their work, but most are afraid of losing their jobs or forgotten how to be creative. This is where you inspire them to go for it and back them up no matter what.
