Viagra A Boon for ManyBy: SuzanneAnn, Thu Jun 15th, 2006 06:33:58 AM Erectile Dysfunction(ED) Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a common health problem especially in men above 40 years. This also occurs in younger men. Erectile Dysfunction is a state when men have difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection. There is a lack of blood flow to the penis. This means a man can have trouble getting and keeping erection. Its treatable through Sildenafil or Viagra. Sildenafil is in a class of medication called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow can cause an erection. The brand name for Sildenafil is Viagra. (Article continued below)
Viagra Viagra was originally developed for the treatment of hypertension and for men suffering from chest pain. Sildenafil citrate as heart medication did not show good results. Viagra is made by Pfizer pharmaceuticals. However, based on published information about its other side effects Pfizer researchers began to look at it as a treatment for Erectile Dysfunction. Viagra was launched in the US in 1998 and was an instant hit to treat impotence and to treat Erectile Dysfunction. It is the first approved non-surgical treatment of ED that does not have to be either injected or inserted directly into the penis to achieve and maintain an erection. Side effects After its launch and successive approval of using it for the treatment of ED there were reports of side effects. Though Viagra is generally well tolerated but side effects include Headache, Flushing, Indigestion, Urinary Tract Infection, Nasal congestion and Dizziness. Recent reports also suggest a possible risk of blindness. This is a rare condition in which blood supply is reduced to the optic nerve causing permanent nerve damage. This was primarily seen in patients suffering from diabetes and heart diseases. Viagra should be taken with proper consultation from the physician. It is extremely important that problems like diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure problems or any other disease should be reported to the doctor before starting on Viagra. Men taking Nitrates in any form should not be treated with Viagra. Some drugs can alter the way Viagra works in the body or vice versa.
