I believe...

"The Apostles' Creed"

"I believe in God..."

Every person has a creed. Everyone believes in something or someone. The atheist believes there is no God. He's banking on his belief but if he's wrong, then he will face God's eternal judgment. The agnostic believes the middle road position. He believes there might or might not be a god. He's not sure. He's hoping that physical death is the end to all existence. The hedonist believes in pleasure. His god is the here and now. Yes, everyone believes in something; everyone has a creed. For me, I choose to believe in God. What say you?

(Article continued below)

Dr. D. James Kennedy, quoting Dr. Mortimer Adler--one of the greatest authors of modern history--says, "'all of the writers of all of the great books of the western world are included in this chapter with the exception of just one or two pure mathematicians. Why? Because more consequences flow from belief in or disbelief in God than any other single source.'" I believe in God. That's the most significant statement a person can make. Pascal's wager states, "If I bet that there isn't a God and there isn't--nothing gained, nothing lost. But if there is, then eternal gain!" The Bible does not try to prove God's existence. It simply states that God is, and all creation should acknowledge Him. The Bible says in Psalms 14:1, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God."

The story is told about Napoleon and his army that were sailing across the waters of the Mediterranean to Egypt. On the voyage, his generals were gathered one night on the ship's deck and were arguing about God. A number of atheists, one after another, were setting forth their views and their arguments about why they believed that God did not exist. Napoleon had a great mind and no doubt had pondered these ideas himself, but listened to their arguments patiently. Finally, when they concluded, they looked to him to see his reaction. He simply looked up at the night sky with millions of stars coruscating in the black heavens above. Waving his hand, he said, 'But, monsieur, who made all that?'

To say that you believe in God is not to say you believe in something that modern science contradicts. Some of the greatest minds to have ever speculated or put forth a scientific theory were devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Sir Isaac Newton, probably the greatest scientist of all times who recorded the three laws of motion, was a firm believer in God. Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician who invented the first calculator in the 17th century, was a staunch defender of the faith. There are many more scientists, too numerous to list here. They believed in God and the physical laws of His universe. Space prevents me from listing the myriad of great men and women of history--leaders of nations, ambassadors, statesmen, generals, philosophers, teachers--who believed in God, and they all actively displayed their faith in their daily lives.

And so the Apostles' Creed opens with the declaration, "I believe in God..." To believe in God is to believe in His Word. The Bible says that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..." In other words, God who is Spirit, revealed Himself to man in the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible declares that Jesus took upon himself human flesh to relate to man's dilemma and to bridge the great gap between the Holiness of God and the sinfulness of man. Jesus, God in human flesh, was the mediator between God, the Father, and man the apex of God's creation. The Cross of Calvary bridges the great-gulf expanse and rescues man from his sin. The Cross of Christ is central to living. No man may live as he was meant to live without first coming to the Cross of Jesus Christ in faith. To humbly accept the work of Calvary is to be broken by it. One must die to self-will and become regenerated by the Holy Spirit, being made new in Jesus Christ. Why can I say with confidence that I believe in God? Because I've been introduced to Him through the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and now He lives in me by His Holy Spirit. Yes, I believe in God! What say you? Stay the course! Pastor Terry Dashner (www.ffcba.com)
