Curbing Crime -- need of the hour

By: Nidhi, Fri Dec 9th, 2005 07:47:41 PM

In the recent years, the mounting resources, pressure and power of the criminal groups, which are very well organized, is becoming an issue of concern for the whole world. A very large percentage of the total assets of the world are managed by these organized groups of criminals. They have enormous monetary power so they easily make corruption possible internally and globally. They weaken the steps taken by governments of developing and intermediary countries so that these economies are not able to emerge as independent units.

Curbing the activities of intercontinental criminal organizations will be the major issue for the people responsible for framing policies. The financial potentials of global criminal syndicates engulf all international spheres including the political and social areas of each and every country. Illegal trade in materials like nuclear substances, arms and ammunition apart from drug pedaling, illegal human trafficking is a major threat for all the countries including first world nations like the United States.

The upward trend in cross border prostitution and pornography has grave repercussions on humanity. The finances of international criminal rings have been inflating considerably in recent times. Squandering of these finances in the global money markets has weakened the international monetary set up. Apart from this, hacking of industrial technology by hi-tech criminal groups is threatening the competency of lawful business.

In intermediary nations the results are most destructive because in transitional states, people are trying to set up an independent economy and enforcing law rules. International criminal groups find it very beneficial to frame set up in such countries as these have stagnant economy, powerless governments and no command to enforce the laws fully. There is neither any legal system nor any form of government nor any monetary set up that has the potential of curbing the lust for huge profits, which can be earned by the criminal organizations through illegal activities.

If compared, in the international sphere, the most powerful and well-organized criminal groups are materialized in Soviet states. There is tremendous increase in the number of these criminal groups in the states that have just acquired the status of independent states. These new criminal organizations use network structures as their base and bloodshed as their plan of the so-called business. In the soviet states these conventional criminal groups have their roots in legal economy and even in public and private companies.

These criminal syndicates have infiltrated these nations at each and every level. They provide monetary help for parliament elections as well as campaigns. In certain situations, these organizations have superseded the not so powerful government by giving the security, and other services for the betterment of humanity, which cannot be provided by struggling government. The political arena has been very badly affected by criminal activities. The legal norms required for the foundation of an independent economy cannot be fully enforced due to the infiltration of crime. Most of the citizens are not confidant about the legal norms and proceedings and the capability of government to cater to their basic needs

This well-organized crime and widespread corruption threaten stability of a market economy. The homegrown crime problem within these countries is considerable, but widespread criminal activities all over the world are deteriorating the conditions very badly.

Foreign investors are discouraged by the Corruption and illicit activities of the criminals. It badly affects the economic growth. A major percentage of the assets, prevailing in the state are sent out of the country by refined criminals. It deprives the government of finances required to disburse the salaries. Many prospective investors have found other secure places for investment. It has resulted in elimination of middle class, present is either a very elite class or very poor class. Like in the legal commercial trade, corporate units grow and become more powerful through joint ventures with other enterprises, these criminal organizations also do joint business through partnerships with overseas counterparts.

It has become a necessity for the new nations to form their own lawful norms. By enforcing local law, to track these criminals, is very tedious for any nation. This well thought-out and structured crime can descend to downward trend only by joint efforts because crime has roots in the whole world. These organizational networks are atrocious, but brittle. If all nations enforce their laws strictly, check the existing legal loopholes and initiate joint ventures, then these criminal organizations can be weakened. Efforts from all segments of the socio-political set up are compulsorily needed to curb this ever-rising worldwide crime.

It is very necessary that all the countries enforce proficient and dependable foreign laws otherwise criminal syndicates will continue carrying out their activities. These groups conduct their criminal activities from the nations where government is not able to enforce laws adequately.

The evaluations of the Justice Department of United States are elucidated by two concepts that form the basis of successful criminal investigation. They encourage the amendment of criminal laws so that judicial process becomes more precise. And along with it they emphasize on better synchronization between the legal fraternity and police force. Due to assistance provided by United States many nations are implementing expeditious trial procedures and many other concepts so that they examine and take legal action in complex cases more efficiently. The U.S. is trying its best to combat the activities of criminal organizations. The struggle against this well organized global crime will keep on increasing because criminal syndicates are taking advantage of developments in technology and expanding their activities worldwide.

It is crucial that all the nations mutually cooperate with each other and developed countries help and assist other less developed nations to enforce their criminal laws more effectively and to combat the activities of international criminal organizations.
